Zooming IN - Advanced Light Microscopy Course

Zooming IN - Advanced Light Microscopy Course

This 4 week course is designed for students and researchers who are interested in learning more about how to use different microscopy techniques to answer their scientific questions.

It will be divided into 4 sessions of 2h each:

- SESSION 1: Light microscopy: Overview

This first session will be the introductory module to give a general overview of :

1) Light microscopy and basic concepts of microscopy, types of microscopes and techniques - widefield, confocal, 2photon, superresolution ...

2) Practical examples of which microscopes are suitable for different scientific questions

3) Examples of cellular imaging reagents.

4) Questions.

- SESSION 2: Data Analysis I : Fiji

Dr. Gábor Csordás (Institute of Genetics, Biological Research Centre of the Eötvös Lorand Research Network, Szeged, Hungary)

Overview of Fiji with practical examples. This session will be interactive and the participants will receive instructions prior to the session to optimze time and better explore Fiji possibilities.

- SESSION 3: Data Analysis II : Imaris

Dr. Nick Jones (IMARIS)

Overview of Imaris functions, showing the different packages that are available depending on the field of research and what they include. This will be followed by a practical session where the more general functions can be tested: examples of single plane and z-stack analysis, deconvolution, 3D reconstruction, distance measurements, organelle characteristics quantifications (number, size, shape).

IMARIS will provide a free trial version after the webinar for everyone who wants to keep exploring the software after the session.

- SESSION 4: Applications – Roundtable

Dr. Eurico Morais de Sa (Optogenetics, confocal - I3S Porto, Portugal)

Dr. Timo Dellmann (STED - CECAD, Cologne, Germany)

Prof. Ralf Jungmann (DNA painting - Max Plank Institute, Germany)

Speaker to be confirmed (STORM)

The speakers will explore the different types of microscopy they use and how does it apply to the specific scientific questions, the kind of data obtained, how is data processed, etc . This session will serve as an example of application of light microscopy in research.
